Why attend scientific conferences and symposiums? Case: the XV Symposium of Finnish Tourism and Leisure Research 2026 in Tampere

Participating in the XV Symposium of Finnish Tourism and Leisure Research 2026 was an inspiring experience for me. The symposium brought together researchers from different fields of tourism and leisure research in Tampere during 28-29.4.2026. This symposium was a great place to share ideas, talk about what's new in tourism research, as well as make professional connections. The symposium program is available at: https://www.matkailututkimus.org/symposium/2026/programme/

Sharing knowledge is a big part of any research. Of course, you can get new ideas from articles and books, but talking to people face-to-face really makes a difference. Conferences and symposiums create a setting where new ways of thinking can start, hypotheses can be sharpened, and unexpected answers can be found.

For me, participating in the symposium provided several important results. First and foremost, it was the experience of public speaking. The opportunity to present my research to an interested and welcoming audience helps develop confidence. As such, it teaches how to clearly formulate thoughts and engage in scientific dialogue.

Just as valuable is the chance to make new contacts. Chatting with colleagues and discussing different ideas let me see my own research from fresh angles. Moreover, exchanging opinions  helps to identify areas for further development. The most important - receiving feedback and constructive criticism helps to take a fresh look at the research. Thus, participating in scientific conferences is not only about presenting own results, it's also a really important step in growing professionally and academically. The inspiration that comes from such events is especially significant. Sometimes, a single short conversation can spark further work.

In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Tourism Education and Research Support Association for their support of my doctoral research. I also warmly thank the organizing committee of the Symposium of Finnish Tourism and Leisure Research, as well as the Board of the Finnish Society for Tourism Research, for their valuable work in supporting the research community. Special thanks go to Juulia Räikkönen and Katja Pasanen for their dedication and efforts in organizing the symposium.
